My Mood Board

The genre I chose for my mood board is Drama. This genre piqued my interest as it is such a broad and widely diverse category of film, in which aspects of comedy or even tragedy can be infused into this one genre. Typically the conventions of a drama include realistic characters, settings, stories, intense conflicts, and most notably emotional appeal.  What really interested me in the genre of Drama is the emotional aspect. A drama can be so powerful that it can move an entire audience emotionally. With a drama, the audience is able to relate and connect to the movie due to the realistic and emotional conventions of the genre. In particular, I decided to follow a more dark, melancholy, and tragic take on a drama for my mood board.  A movie that portrays these types of moods and feelings can follow many differing drama themes such as injustice, drugs, loss, poverty, but I decided to cover the struggle of mental illness, specifically amongst girls. My mood board is supposed to provide a guideline for my movie in which a girl is struggling with depression and an eating disorder. Every aspect of my mood board has an intention, but isn't necessarily representative of my final product, as I go along in my movie-making process I'm sure my original ideas and concepts will further develop or even change completely.  Nevertheless, mood boards are important for planning a movie, guiding filmmakers, and organizing ideas. Let me explain my mood board!

The idea that was a key focal point in the development of my mood board was this concept of a girl having an internal conflict with herself regarding her eating disorder and depression. This idea that I wanted to portray drew me to the drama genre since drama provides an emotional component that would aid my movie. Aspects of my mood board such as the measuring tape around hands and the pain-filled girls, showcase the struggle of being bound by a mental illness or a disorder and create a sense of intensity and sadness. This is an idea that many girls can relate to and connect with which is a reaction typical of a drama. A classic and usual convention of a drama is the use of symbolism which can send a message to the audience to generate that emotional reaction and feeling. Furthermore, the woman whose body is composed of rose petals is symbolic of the fragility and beauty of women's bodies which ties into my movie since many girls struggle with the appearance of their bodies. This picture is particularly impactful as it adds to the mood of the board by bringing a dramatic, and feminine feel. Moreover, the cracked mirror is representative of the cracks in a women's confidence as she looks in the mirror and holds herself to society's beauty standard. The mirror also creates an ominous feel while also conveying ideas of beauty, self-worth, superficialness, appearance, which all align with the movie I was trying to envision. The picture of two sides of a girl, one happy and one sad, shows the idea that sometimes people may look happy but those who struggle with mental illness may not always show that they are struggling. This picture adds to the sad and intense mood of the board by showing the struggle and pain many have to endure. An important aspect of my mood board is the color scheme. I followed a more natural color palette in order to align with the realistic conventions of a drama film. The more realistic a drama is the more emotional impact it can have on others since the audience is better able to relate to more realistic ideas, characters, and issues. The use of the colors, white, green, beige, rusty-orange, and grey follow this natural and almost earthy scheme that won't distract the audience from the movie itself while also creating a gloomy mood. Following a certain color scheme is important to the mood of the movie and creates consistency throughout. 

Overall, my mood board creates a feel of drama, intensity, sadness, struggle, fragility, feminity, darkness, and pain which all correlate with my movie about a girl who is victim to her depression and eating disorder. Each picture has a purpose in creating the atmosphere and mood of my movie. My mood board helps to create a visual representation of how I want my movie to feel and look. Developing my mood board has also helped me to figure out how to make my movie convey what it is intended to and has helped me to figure out certain components of my drama film such as, which props I may use.  It was exciting to see how all my pictures came together to create a specific feel that shines through the board to the viewer. I can't want to make the movie board come to life in my movie!
